Description & Requirements

As the Payroll Team Lead, you will provide day-to-day oversight and hands-on support across weekly payroll cycles within a complex, multi-award project environment. Leading a small team of Payroll Administrators, you will allocate workflow, review payroll outputs prior to submission and act as the first escalation point for payroll queries, while still being actively involved in payroll processing and reconciliations. This role suits a Senior Payroll Officer or Payroll Supervisor from a resources, construction or project-based environment who is looking to step into a leadership role while remaining operationally hands-on.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Hands-on involvement in weekly payroll processing across multiple projects
  • Overseeing workflow and supporting a small team of Payroll Administrators (2–4 team members)
  • Reviewing, auditing and approving payroll data prior to submission
  • Acting as the primary escalation point for payroll, leave and timesheet queries
  • Coordinating payroll inputs including timesheets, allowances, cost coding and leave
  • Ensuring payroll compliance with awards, EBAs and legislative requirements
  • Partnering with HR, Finance and Project teams to ensure payroll accuracy and alignment with project requirements
  • Supporting payroll set-up for new projects and campaigns
  • Contributing to payroll process improvements, reporting enhancements and system optimisation
  • Supporting audits and maintaining strong payroll controls
  • Occasional travel to onshore Oil & Gas facilities may be required
What you’ll bring:
  • Experience as a Senior Payroll Officer, Payroll Supervisor or Payroll Team Lead within a high-volume environment
  • Proven experience in weekly payroll processing and end-to-end payroll cycles
  • Experience working within resources, construction, engineering or project-based environments (highly regarded)
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or mentoring payroll staff
  • Strong understanding of payroll legislation, awards and EBAs
  • High attention to detail with strong reconciliation and problem-solving capability
  • Confident stakeholder engagement across HR, Finance and project teams
  • Strong systems capability across payroll and time & attendance systems
  • Ability to manage competing priorities within a fast-paced project environment
  • A hands-on, practical leadership style with a focus on continuous improvement
